Miracles and Wonders
I hear your prayers
In the days following Deb's surgery, we began to talk more about God and the
importance of prayer, and Debbie began reading the Bible. I did my best to remember
what I had learned in Sunday school many years before and I was usually able to
answer her questions adequately. Then shortly before starting chemotherapy, she asked
a question for which I was unprepared: "How do I know that I am saved?"   For me,
that has always been like the question: what is art?  The answer is I can't explain it but I
know it when I see it. I stumbled my way through a pretty weak answer that didn't go
much beyond quoting John 3:16 and telling her that if you believe then you're saved. I
could tell she wasn't very satisfied, and that it was really weighing heavily on her mind,
so as I drove to the grocery store I prayed for God to give me the words to talk to her
about this issue.

I was almost out of gas so I pulled into one of my usual gas stations, and just stood
staring off into space as the tank filled. My eye fell on a piece of paper jammed into the
bracket holding an advertisement on top of the pump. It said "Destination?" in big letters
and showed a semi-truck surrounded by names like Atlanta and Boston. I was bored so
I picked it up to have something to read. About half way through the first page I
realized that it was a religious tract that asked "What is your ultimate destination,
Heaven or Hell?" and then it talked about what is necessary in order to become a
Christian. The back page even had a collection of scriptures called "The Romans
Highway" that laid out the three things that you must do. First, accept that you are a
sinner. Second, realize that Jesus is the embodiment of salvation. And third, call on
Jesus name to save you.

In three small pages, this tract provided the words that I had just prayed to receive, and
provided the Bible verses to back them up. As the hairs on the back of my neck started
to rise, I looked at the other seven pumps that I could have chosen and saw that none
of them had any of these tracts. And then I thought back to the dozens of other times
that I had stopped here for gas and I couldn't remember a single time when I had seen
anything displayed at the pump. I looked up toward the sky, smiled, and said aloud
"
Now You're just showin' off".

Then I went home, read the tract with Debbie, read her the suggested scriptures from
the book of Romans, and we had a nice long discussion about salvation.

For those who are interested the tract was produced by the Faith Baptist Tract Ministry
of Resaca, GA.  Since their motto is "All tracts free as the Lord provides", I'm guessing
they won't mind if I include it on this website (click on the images to see a larger
version of each page):
