Miracles and Wonders
The scan results
At the end of "The Medical Story", we had received a call to stop by the oncologist's
office on our way out of the building after giving a blood sample for some tests. This
was after surgery and six cycles of chemotherapy and immediately after having a PET
scan to check on the progress of the treatments. Getting called into the office made us
extremely nervous because the nurse will usually give you good news or even
inconclusive news over the phone, but it's usually bad news that requires a visit to the
doctor office.
So we checked in at the reception desk and waited with trepidation while they let Sheri,
our nurse, know that we had arrived. When Sheri came out smiling we started to relax
a bit, then she sat next to Debbie and said that she had our scan results and she just had
to let us know as quickly as possible. The PET scan had showed no signs of any
remaining cancer and the CT scan report was full of words like "the tumor in the neck
is resolved" which is medical jargon for "it's gone". Every bit of news in the scan
results was as good as possible.
We left the office walking on air. We stopped in the hallway right outside the doctor's
office and hugged and cried and prayed and laughed and hugged some more.
A few days later we met with the oncologist and he confirmed that Debbie had had a
complete response to the chemotherapy and that she was now cancer-free. We knew
this wasn't the end of the road for us because ovarian cancer is very bad about coming
back after a few months or years, but to this point her progress had followed an ideal
path that ended with the best possible outcome. We had placed our faith in God, that
faith had been rewarded with the promise of a miracle, and now that miracle was
documented for the world to see.
